Supporting School Choice in Nevada
Avela Powers Washoe County School District’s ‘School of Choice’ Program
Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, students in the Washoe County School District (Reno, NV) can choose a school other than their designated zoned school. This “School of Choice” program has been streamlined and made more accessible through the district’s partnership with Avela.
“We want our students and families to have the opportunity to make their own choices among schools that may be outside their zoned school, and the School of Choice program makes that possible,” said Desiree Mandeville, WCSD’s director of student accounting. “We believe students will be the most successful in the school where they feel connected, seen and engaged with an academic program that best suits their needs.”
Once the School of Choice application is approved and accepted by the parent or guardian, the student will be assigned to the approved school through the grade levels available at that school. However, if a student is already in fifth- or eighth grade, families must submit a new School of Choice application for the coming year, or the student will be automatically assigned to attend their zoned school for their next grade level in middle school or high school. Parents and guardians may log into their Avela account to see updates to their School of Choice application.
